Wave-Particle Duality & the Two-Slit Experiment: Analysis
(and also the Einstein relation E = hν). How can the same “object” be thought of simultaneously as a wave and as a particle? According to the standard Born interpretation of the wave function, ψ(x), its square gives the probability per unit volume of finding the electron at point x. Suppose now that we want to describe in this way a particle known, with fair confidence, to be located somewhere ...
متن کاملTesting Wave-Particle Duality with Single-Photon Interference Measurements
We have observed wave and particle characteristics of light in two distinct experiments. In the first case, a strongly attenuated HeNe laser was passed through a Mach-Zender interferometer. The two legs of the interferometer were given definite, mutually perpendicular polarization to provide which-way information. The resulting interference pattern was captured using a wicked expensive Electron...
متن کاملDiffraction of a nondispersive wave packet in the two slit interference experiment
In Young's two slit interference experiment, a single light particle or "~photon'" imparts its energy onto a dot on one of the light fringes of the diffracted field. In this work, it will be shown that a pulse solution of the scalar wave equation, or Maxwell's equations, going through a two slit screen reproduces the aforementioned single event interference effect. This solution, called the foc...
متن کاملWave Particle Duality in General Relativity
In this paper a one to one correspondence is established between spacetime metrics of general relativity and the wave equations of quantum mechanics. This is done by first taking the square root of the metric associated with a space and from there, passing directly to a corresponding expression in the dual space. It is shown that in the case of a massless particle, Maxwell’s equation for a phot...
متن کاملOptical solitons and wave-particle duality.
We investigate the propagation of optical solitons interacting with linear defects in the medium. We show that solitons exhibit a wave-particle dualism versus power, i.e., depending on the relative size of soliton and defect, responsible for a soliton trajectory dependent on its waist.
